Sheetrock is hung over metal or wooden studs to create ceilings and walls. Once the sheetrock is nailed or screwed into the studs tape and spackling compounds are applied to finish out the walls. Openings are cut into the sheetrock to allow electric outlets, switches and lights to be installed later.
Once the sheetrock is hung, it is finished with tape and spackling compound to cover the seams of the sheetrock and the nail and screw holes. This process is called finishing the sheetrock. The finishing crew is trained to apply tape and even coats of spackling to complete the process of sheet rocking.
